Into the Shadows: Gideon Adlon on the Complex Descent of Devon Izara in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord

The Star Wars galaxy has long explored the dichotomy of the Force, but rarely has it peered so deeply into the moral gray areas of the Imperial era as it does in the new hit series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. At the heart of this turbulent narrative is Devon Izara, a Twi’lek Jedi Padawan whose journey from a hopeful initiate to a survivor forged in the fires of loss serves as the series’ emotional anchor.

Voiced with raw, kinetic intensity by actress Gideon Adlon, Devon represents a new breed of Star Wars protagonist: one who is as capable of profound compassion as she is of terrifying, justified rage. As the first season concludes its gripping ten-episode run on Disney+, Adlon sat down with StarWars.com to unpack the character’s evolution, the influence of the legendary Maul, and what it truly means to exist in a galaxy where the light has been systematically extinguished.

The Genesis of a Padawan: Understanding Devon Izara

To understand Devon Izara is to understand the quintessential experience of a teenager caught in a world that no longer makes sense. While she is a Jedi by training, Adlon emphasizes that her character’s internal landscape is defined by the universal turbulence of adolescence.

"She wants to protect everyone—Rylee, Lawson, Daki, herself," Adlon explains, noting the heavy burden placed on a young woman who has never been granted the stability of a fully realized Jedi Order. "She wants to protect Maul, too. And, in those moments of frustration, she wants to kill everyone. That’s just the raw, unfiltered reality of how you feel as a teenage girl. It’s an intensity that is both beautiful and dangerous."

For Adlon, stepping into the Star Wars universe was a surreal full-circle moment. Like many of her generation, her first introduction to the franchise’s darker edges came via Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. "I remember being genuinely frightened of Darth Maul as a child watching it with my dad," she recalls. Years later, that fear has transformed into a complex creative partnership, as Adlon finds herself portraying a character whose destiny is inextricably linked to the very figure who once haunted her childhood imagination.

Chronology of a Descent: From Janix to the Underworld

The narrative arc of Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1 is a masterclass in tension. The story begins on the bustling, unforgiving streets of Janix, where Devon and her Master, Eeko-Dio Daki, are forced to operate in the shadows to avoid the encroaching reach of the Galactic Empire.

The Early Days: Moral Ambiguity

From the series’ premiere, the audience is introduced to a version of the Jedi who is far from the stoic masters of the Republic era. Devon is seen breaking boundaries, including the theft of food—a choice that clearly violates the teachings of the Jedi Order but speaks to the desperate reality of survival. "She is a Jedi," Adlon notes, "but the world she’s living in is profoundly unfair. She’s at a point in her life where she is deeply confused about right and wrong."

The Catalyst: The Fall of Daki

The pivotal turning point of the season occurs in the tenth episode, with the tragic death of Master Eeko-Dio Daki. If the first nine episodes were about Devon’s struggle to reconcile her Jedi identity with the necessity of survival, the finale is the moment that "flips the switch."

Adlon views this as the definitive end of Devon’s innocence. "Grief changes a person," she observes. "The path you walk on after that brings out new colors. When you lose someone you love, you are capable of anything. The writers did a beautiful job of crafting a space where Devon’s transition into darkness feels earned, not forced."

The Alliance: A Union of Necessity

Following the loss of her master, Devon finds herself at a crossroads. With nowhere else to turn, she enters a precarious alliance with Maul—a man she initially distrusted and feared. While she is aware of his reputation and his role as a dark-sider, she recognizes a reflection of her own pain in him. "It’s not love," Adlon clarifies. "It’s something else—a form of survival. Maul feels like the safest option because he is the only one who doesn’t lie to her about the state of the galaxy."

Behind the Scenes: The Craft of the Star Wars Scream

The production of Maul – Shadow Lord was marked by an intense, collaborative atmosphere that pushed its voice cast to their limits. Working alongside Sam Witwer—the definitive voice of Maul since his debut in The Clone Wars—Adlon found a mentor who provided not just performance cues, but an encyclopedic knowledge of the lore.

"Sam is Maul," Adlon says. "Watching him perform in the studio is a total joy and a masterclass. He knows every nuance of the character’s history."

The recording sessions were far from stationary affairs. To capture the kinetic energy of the show’s frequent, high-stakes fight sequences, the cast was encouraged to remain physically active during recording. "We’re in a studio, but it feels cinematic," Adlon describes. "During the fight sequences, everyone is moving. We’re doing the ‘effort’ sounds, the lunges, the dodges. It’s incredibly visceral. I love it because, with Star Wars, you can really let it all out. You get to channel something very feral."

Implications: The Moral Gray of the Empire

The brilliance of Maul – Shadow Lord lies in its refusal to provide easy answers. The series asks a fundamental question: When the institutions of justice—the Republic and the Jedi Order—have collapsed, what obligation does an individual have to their own morality?

Devon’s journey is a reflection of the "age of the Empire," a time where the binary of light versus dark has been fractured into a million shades of gray. Her frustration with Master Daki’s passive approach to survival highlights the divide between the old guard of the Jedi and the new generation, who feel the urgency of the Imperial threat in their daily lives.

By the end of Season 1, Devon is no longer the girl who stole food on Janix. She is a woman who has tasted the power of the dark side and has accepted that her path forward will be carved by her own hand. As the series moves into its highly anticipated second season, the question remains: Can she hold onto the remnants of her Jedi training, or will she be fully consumed by the "Shadow Lord" she now calls an ally?

Official Perspectives and Future Horizons

The reception to the character of Devon Izara has been overwhelmingly positive, with fans praising the character’s aesthetic design and the depth of her struggle. Adlon is particularly excited about the potential for fan engagement, specifically in the world of cosplay.

"She’s so pretty," Adlon says with a laugh. "I can’t believe that this is who I get to play. Her lekku are beautiful, her color is great. I honestly can’t wait to see people dressing up as her."

The production team behind Maul – Shadow Lord has confirmed that Season 2 is already in active development, promising to delve even deeper into the psyche of both Maul and his newfound protégé. For Adlon, the experience has been transformative.

"Everybody on the show is genuinely excited. They’re all nerding out about how different this is and how no one has seen this perspective in the universe yet," she notes. "No matter how old you are, or where you are in the world, Star Wars makes you feel something. It is truly special to be a part of that."

As the age of the Empire continues to cast its long, dark shadow over the galaxy, Devon Izara stands at the center of the storm. Her journey is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the most compelling stories are the ones that force us to look in the mirror and question what we would do if we had nothing left to lose.

All episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1 are currently available for streaming on Disney+. As the dust settles on the first season, the only certainty is that for Devon Izara, the true test of her allegiance—and her soul—is only just beginning.
